Will Not Accept HC Order Scrapping OBC Status of Several Classes In Bengal: Mamata
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said she “will not accept” the Calcutta High Court order scrapping OBC status for several categories in the state. He indicated that the government may appeal the case to the Supreme Court.
Addressing an election rally in Kurdah under Dumdum Lok Sabha constituency, Banerjee said OBC reservation would continue in the state as the bill in question was passed under the Constitution.
“The OBC reservation quota introduced by the West Bengal government will continue. We have drafted the bill after conducting a door-to-door survey and it has been approved by the Cabinet and the Lok Sabha,” he said.
“If needed, we will move the higher court (against the order),” TMC said.
Citing the Calcutta High Court’s May 20 order restraining the BJP from publishing advertisements that violate the model code of conduct, Banerjee claimed that such advertisements are continuously coming out and that she is planning a Rs 1,000 crore lawsuit against the saffron party. Will file a defamation case.
Banerjee accused the BJP of conspiring to disrupt the OBC quota by using central agencies.
“Some people went to court, filed petitions to eliminate the interests of OBCs and then this development happened. How can the saffron party show such audacity? He said.
The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday revoked the OBC status of several categories in West Bengal, finding such reservation under the 2012 Act for vacancies in services and posts in the state illegal. He said that after the failure of its Sandeshkhali conspiracy, BJP is now hatching a new conspiracy.
He said, you (BJP) are doing all this for vote politics, to remain in power for five years.
Banerjee said this happened after Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed that if the opposition India Bloc comes to power in the Lok Sabha elections, he will abolish the quota for SC, IC and BC members.
He said, “SC, ST, OBC get rights as per the Constitution. Minorities also get their rights. Can anyone say that they will make laws only in favor of Hindus and exclude Muslims and other communities?”
