Rahul Gandhi won from Wayanad and Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituencies and has to vacate one seat within 14 days of the Lok Sabha results being declared on June 4.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Monday made it clear that he will retain the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha seat and give up his Lok Sabha seat in Wayanad. Meanwhile, his sister Priyanka Gandhi will contest the bypoll in Wayanad in Kerala. Speaking at a press conference, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said the decision was taken during the party meeting today (June 17). He said, “Rahul Gandhi won two Lok Sabha seats, but as per the law, he has to vacate one. Rahul Gandhi will retain Bareilly. We have decided that Priyanka ji will contest from Wayanad.”

Meanwhile, speaking at the press conference, Rahul Gandhi said both Rae Bareli and Wayanad will “get two MPs”. “I have been a Member of Parliament from Wayanad for the last five years and the people of Wayanad have given me love, and for that I thank them… Priyanka will contest from Wayanad, but I will continue to visit Wayanad and fulfil the promises we made to Wayanad,” he said, adding, “I have an old relationship with Rae Bareli.” “Priyanka Gandhi has finally made her electoral debut from Wayanad seat after Rahul Gandhi vacated the seat while retaining the family bastion of Rae Bareli seat.
The decision came after senior party leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and general secretary KC Venugopal and Priyanka Gandhi held a meeting at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence to decide which Lok Sabha seat Rahul Gandhi will retain. Rahul Gandhi, who contested from two seats – Rae Bareli and Wayanad, won both the constituencies with huge margins.

Speaking to reporters, Congress leader KC Venugopal said that the people of Kerala love Priyanka Gandhi and she will win with a huge margin. He said, “Everyone is happy with the decision. Rahul Gandhi will retain Rae Bareli and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra will contest from Wayanad.”
