Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has accused current PM Narendra Modi of diminishing the dignity of the Prime Minister’s office. This accusation follows Modi’s recent claim that the Singh-led government asserted Muslims had the first right to wealth.
In a detailed three-page letter, Singh rebutted Modi’s allegations, stating he never favored one community over another. Singh addressed this letter to the citizens as the Lok Sabha elections approached their final phase.

Singh stated, “I have been closely observing the political discourse during this election. Modiji has indulged in hateful and divisive rhetoric. He is the first Prime Minister to degrade the stature of the office with such vile, unparliamentary language aimed at specific communities and the opposition. Throughout my career, I have never discriminated between communities. This divisive strategy is a unique trait of the BJP.”
Ahead of the June 1 voting in Punjab, Singh urged voters to support development and inclusive progress, emphasizing that only the Congress party can ensure growth and uphold constitutional values.
Critiquing the current economic situation, the esteemed economist blamed the BJP for the country’s financial troubles.
“In the past decade, the economy has faced severe challenges. The demonetisation fiasco, poorly implemented GST, and inadequate handling of the Covid-19 crisis have led to a bleak economic landscape. GDP growth has stagnated at an average of 6-7 percent, compared to around 8 percent during the Congress-UPA era,” Singh noted.
He further remarked, “Despite numerous challenges, the Congress-UPA era consistently enhanced the purchasing power of the people. In contrast, the BJP’s mismanagement has driven household savings to a 47-year low.”
Singh’s statements reflect a strong critique of the current administration, emphasizing the need for a change in governance to restore economic stability and social harmony.
