Bangladesh Protest Live Updates: Indian government has advised citizens not to travel to Bangladesh as violence on Sunday left nearly 100 students dead
Bangladesh Protest Live Updates: At least 97 people were killed on Sunday as student protests against quota reforms in the country turned violent. India has advised its citizens not to travel to Bangladesh until further notice amid fresh student protests demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The protests began last month, when the Bangladesh Supreme Court ruled in favour of restoring a 30 per cent quota in government jobs for descendants of freedom fighters.
After Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina refused to meet students’ demand to reverse the order, the protests intensified, leading to clashes with police and groups supporting the government.
More than 200 people were killed and many injured during the agitation. The government also cut off all broadband or internet connections for 11 days, which were gradually restored after some time.
The protests subsided for a while when talks with the government began, but it resumed when students called for a nationwide civil disobedience movement and asked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to step down.
The students are demanding a public apology from Hasina for the deaths and the sacking of several of her ministers. They also want the government to reopen schools and universities, which have been closed since the protests intensified.
