With an iPad ad slammed as “destruction of the human experience,” Apple issues an apology.

Many people found an advertisement picturing a massive hydraulic press smashing cultural artefacts to be offensive.

 

Following criticism on the internet, Apple issued an apology for an iPad advertisement that showed a large hydraulic press smashing a variety of artistic items, such as books and musical instruments.

In the video, which was released by Apple CEO Tim Cook on Tuesday, the machine is seen squishing a variety of objects, including a piano, a metronome, paint cans, and an arcade game, before one iPad Pro takes their place. “The most powerful iPad ever is also the thinnest,” a voiceover continues.

American filmmaker Justine Bateman, who has voiced concerns about artificial intelligence’s effects on her field, posted on X with the following message: “Why did Apple create an advertisement that undermines the arts? AI and technology are tools to destroy society and the arts alike.

Later, Apple expressed regret and admitted that the advertisement was poorly received.

According to Tor Myhren, Apple’s vice-president of marketing communications, “creativity is in our DNA at Apple, and it’s incredibly important to us to design products that empower creatives all over the world,” the company sent an announcement to the trade journal Ad Age. “Our mission is to consistently highlight the diverse ways that iPad users express themselves and realize their ideas. We apologize; we feel that this video fell short.
