Surjit Patar, 79, is a Punjabi poet and writer.
The poems “Hawa Vich Likhe Harf,” “Hanere Vich Sulagdi Varanmala,” “Patjhar Di Pazeb,” “Lafzaan Di Dargah,” and “Surzameen” are among those written by Patar.
Recipient of the Padma Shri Surjit Patar, a poet from Punjab, passed away early on Saturday morning at his home close to Barewal Colony. He was seventy-nine.
According to his family, Patar passed away while sleeping.
Around 6:30 am, his wife Bhupinder Kaur attempted to wake him, but he did not reply. They reported a doctor had declared him dead.
Patar’s wife and two boys, one of whom resides in Australia, survive him.
According to Patar’s close buddy Gurbhajan Gill, cremation will probably take place on Monday following the arrival of Patar’s son from Australia.
Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was among the many politicians, performers, and singers who expressed their sorrow at Patar’s passing and noted that it is a significant loss for the Punjabi literary community.

In 2012, he was awarded the Padma Shri in the fields of education and writing. Patar presided over the Punjab Arts Council as its president. In addition, he served as the Punjabi Sahit Akademi’s president.
The Sahitya Akademi Award, Panchnad Puruskar, Saraswati Samman, and Kusumagraj Literary Award have all been given to the poet and writer.
He graduated from Randhir College in Kapurthala and the Guru Nanak Dev University with a Ph.D. on the topic of “Transformation of Folklore in Guru Nanak Vani.” He was born and raised in Patar Village in the Jalandhar area.
He left the Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana after thirty years of service as a professor of Punjabi.
Patar has also translated into Punjabi the plays Nagmandala by Girish Karnad, the three tragedies by Federico Garcia Lorca, and poems by Pablo Neruda and Bertolt Brecht.
In a post on X, Chief Minister Mann expressed his heartfelt sadness on Patar’s death.
Amrinder Singh Raja Warring, the Punjab Congress president, described it as an irreparable loss for Punjabi literature.
He expressed his sadness at the death of Patar, who served the Punjabi language and made it shine on the world map.

My sincere sympathies to his family and the millions of admirers around the world.
