Reacting to Rahul Gandhi’s “Hindu” remark, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday called the Congress leader “immature”. “We thought Rahul Gandhi would mature after becoming the leader of the opposition, but I am sad to say that only someone with an immature mind can make such statements,” he said.

Yogi Adityanath slams Rahul Gandhi for attributing ‘accidental Hindu’ quote to Nehru, but the truth lies elsewhere…
Adityanath slammed Rahul Gandhi over a quote often attributed to Nehru calling himself an “accidental Hindu”, but a fact check shows that the remark was first made in 1959 by NB Khare.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for misattributing a controversial quote to India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, alleging in the process that “they (the Nehru-Gandhi family) call themselves accidental Hindus”.
Speaking to ANI on April 29, the BJP leader said: “People who don’t know the history and geography of India will definitely make such irrelevant comments when I talk about Rahul Gandhi, I remember once these people used to call themselves Hindus by mistake”.
“India has a rich tradition and our saints, Maharajas and every section of society have contributed in their respective fields… Rahul ji never remembered the atrocities committed by the Mughals who left no stone unturned to Islamise India… It is unfortunate that people who call themselves…accidental Hindus cannot feel proud of India’s heritage…”
Did Nehru really say “accidental Hindus”?
According to a fact-check done by Alt News, the first reference to this alleged comment, “accidental Hindus”, appeared in 1959 and is attributed to politician NP Khare. Academics credit Khaire with making this remark in reference to Jawaharlal Nehru.
A fact check found Nehru’s own words about being a Hindu in the 1929 resolution of the Indian National Congress demanding ‘Purna Swaraj’ from the British. In his speech as Congress President at Lahore, Nehru said the following about being a Hindu:
“I was born a Hindu, but I do not know to what extent I have a right to call myself a Hindu or to speak on behalf of the Hindus, but birth still has significance in this country, and by virtue of birthright I venture to dedicate myself to it and it should be their privilege to lead with generosity. Generosity is not only good morality but often good policy and good expediency, and it is inconceivable that Hindus would be so helpless in independent India.
PM Modi launches ‘Aurangzeb’ attack on Rahul Gandhi
Adityanath’s remarks came as the BJP and Congress exchanged criticism after Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed that Gandhi “did not remember those (Mughals) who destroyed our religious places”.
Further, Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh accused Modi of “maliciously distorting every statement made by Gandhi to incite communal passions”.

“The Prime Minister has gone beyond being pathetic. He is maliciously and mischievously twisting every statement of Rahul Gandhi to incite, provoke and inflame communal prejudices and passions. His exit is inevitable and the realisation of this is making him more desperate.” “Election campaign speeches are truly embarrassing,” Ramesh posted on his website Social Media X (formerly known as Twitter).
