Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on Thursday claimed that Prime Minister Narendra Modi got more screen time than opposition leader Rahul Gandhi during President Draupadi Murmu’s address to the joint session of Parliament today.

“Who appeared how many times in the President’s 51-minute speech?”

• Leader of the House of Representatives, Narendra Modi: 73 times

• Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi: 6 times

• Government: 108 times

• Opposition: 18 times

“Sansad TV is for showing proceedings of the House, not Kamarajvi’s narrow-mindedness,” Ramesh had earlier posted on Twitter in Hindi.

President Draupadi Murmu reiterated the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s stand on the Emergency imposed by Indira Gandhi in 1975 in her address to the House on Thursday.

Addressing a joint session of both Houses, Murmu said when the Constitution was being drafted, certain forces in the world were hoping that India would fail.

She pointed out that there were several attacks on the Constitution even after it came into force.

“Today is June 27. The imposition of Emergency on June 25, 1975 was the biggest and darkest chapter of a direct attack on the Constitution, but the country emerged victorious over these unconstitutional forces in the heart of the Republic of India,” she said.

The President also reacted to recent incidents related to irregularities and alleged cheating in the NEET and UGC NET examinations.

PM Modi appeared 12 times more on TV than Rahul Gandhi during President’s address: Jairam Ramesh shares data

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi appeared on television 73 times during the President’s 51-minute speech on Thursday, while opposition leader Rahul Gandhi appeared six times.

Did the government TV channel give unfair coverage to the opposition during the President’s speech in Parliament? Congress crunched some numbers to highlight “how many times the President’s 51-minute speech was presented”. The party alleged that there was a huge difference in the coverage given to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi.

They shared an analysis that supports the claim that the photographer covering the Parliament channel’s headlines was biased towards the opposition.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said that Prime Minister and Leader of the House Narendra Modi appeared on television 73 times, while Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi appeared six times, i.e. 12 times less than Prime Minister Modi.

He further claimed that the government was presented 108 times and the opposition only 18 times. “Sansad TV is for showing the proceedings of the House, not for the narrow-mindedness of the paparazzi,” Ramesh posted on X on Thursday.

Sansad TV is the Indian parliamentary channel. The state television channel was created in 2021 by merging Lok Sabha Television and Rajya Sabha Television. The channel broadcasts proceedings of the Houses of Parliament and other public affairs programmes.

President’s speech

President Draupadi Murmu on Thursday addressed a joint session of Parliament. This was her first speech after the constitution of the 18th Lok Sabha.

Murmu said in her speech that the government is working to create an enabling environment for the youth of this country to dream big and make those dreams a reality. She said it is the government’s constant endeavour to provide proper opportunities to the youth of the country to showcase their talent.

“By providing encouragement to the youth and their start-ups, the government has been able to lay a strong foundation for a self-reliant defence sector… In the past, the youth had to run from pillar to post to get their certificates. Now their self-certification is enough,” she said.

She said the central government is working to revive the cultural heritage and glory of the country apart from efforts to build the country’s future and is proud of both development and heritage.

“My government, apart from striving to build the future, is also working to revive the cultural heritage and glory of the country. The new Nalanda University campus inaugurated recently has added a new chapter to it,” she said.

President Murmu highlighted various achievements made by the country in the last few years. Referring to the landing of Chandrayaan-3 spacecraft near the south pole of the moon, she said, as a country, “we should be proud of it,” adding that India is on its way to becoming the third largest economy in the world.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Lok Sabha MP Asaduddin Owaisi on Thursday claimed that “unknown miscreants” vandalised his Delhi residence by attacking it with black ink, questioning Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Speaker Om Birla whether the safety of MPs will be ensured.

The MP also said that this is not the first time he has been the victim of such an attack.

Owaisi said in a post on X (formerly Twitter), “Today some unknown miscreants vandalised my house by smearing it with black ink. I have now lost count how many times my Delhi residence has been targeted.

When I asked Delhi Police officials how this was happening in front of their eyes, they expressed helplessness. @AmitShah this is happening under your watch, @ombirlakota, please tell us if safety of MPs will be guaranteed or not.
